Prized playmaker Jiovani Jalalon took over in the crunch as Arellano U repeated over Lyceum, 78-75, on Tuesday afternoon and provisionally gained a share of the lead in the 92nd NCAA seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Slowed down by foul woes in the first 30 minutes of play, the 5-foot-10 Jalalon banged in 15 of his game-high 33 points in the fourth frame, including 11 of the team’s 14 points inside the final five minutes, standing tall in the Chiefs’ solid finishing kick against the fading Pirates.
The victory enabled Arellano U to bounce back from a 16-point beating dealt by Perpetual Help last week while improving its record to 11-3, momentarily tying host San Beda in the process. The Red Lions are battling Jose Rizal U as of posting time.
“We really needed that. Precise and accurate ‘yung decision-making niya nu’ng huli,” said Arellano U coach Jerry Codiñera of his prized guard from Cagayan de Oro City who made 14 of his 19 attempts inside the arc while adding six rebounds, two assists and as many steals.
The Pirates, who were bidding to pull off an upset and even led by as many as 69-65 going to the last four minutes, dropped their 10th loss in 15 matches, pushing themselves on the brink of elimination.
Cameroon import Mike Nzeusseu tallied 14 points and as many rebounds while locals Jesper Ayaay and Edcor Marata tallied at least 15 markers each but they still could not help Lyceum complete its fightback from 17 points down in the first half. – By Jerome Lagunzad
