In the first heavyweight bout of the NCAA 92 Juniors Basketball Tournament, Arellano High School left no doubt as to who was the number one contender for the belt that has been around the waist of San Beda High School for the last seven years.
Guilmer Dela Torre yet again stuffed the stat sheet and the Braves were in control from start to finish in their 83-74 triumph over erstwhile undefeated Malayan High School on Monday at the San Juan Arena.
Dela Torre netted 15 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and two steals, but it was Lars Sunga who was the centerpiece in the decisive 8-0 run that turned a one-point lead into a 69-60 advantage early in the final frame.
Arellano imposed their will for majority of the game, but still had the Red Robins threatening at 60-61 before Sunga had five points and one assist in the decisive run.
The versatile forward wound up with 13 points while Aaron Fermin also busted out with an 11-point, 13-rebound double-double to help the Braves climb to solo first at 6-0. “Ni-motivate ko lang sa mga batang wag dapat madungisan yung straight start namin,” coach Tyrone Darjuan shared.
On the other hand, Malayan suffered their first setback despite the best efforts of Jasper Salenga who had 27 points and 11 rebounds. They now stand at solo third with a 4-1 record.
Chasing the Braves in the leaderboard is defending champion San Beda who rode the hefty shoulders of Sam Abu Hijleh to a convincing 97-72 victory versus College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills.
Abu Hijleh pounded in 10 points in the second quarter to turn a two-point margin into a 47-33 advantage still for the Red Cubs at the half.
The veteran big man finished with 18 points and five rebounds while Germy Mahinay pounded in his own 12-point, 11-rebound double-double in San Beda’s fifth win in a row to open their title defense.
For the Junior Blazers, it was Troy Mallillin who topped the scoring column with 18 points. They stay at fourth-place even with their second loss in five games.
In other results, Colegio de San Juan de Letran made sure San Sebastian College-Recoletos stayed out of the win column courtesy of an 80-73 decision while tying them at fifth-place with a 3-3 record are University of Perpetual Help who made quick work of also winless Emilio Aguinaldo High School. 87-70.
