MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion Arellano University fended off the upset bid of Jose Rizal University (JRU), 25-11, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16, to remain unbeaten in the NCAA Season 93 women's volleyball tournament on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Regine Arocha fired 20 points and Jovielyn Prado had 17 markers to lead the way for Arellano. Three other Lady Chiefs also contributed double-digits as they came up with their fourth consecutive victory.
Arellano remains comfortably at the top of the league standings.
"I'm happy that we won, but I'm still concerned because we have some issues, like our reception," said Arellano coach Obet Javier.
Javier is hopeful that they can extend their winning streak and eventually sweep the single-round elimination as they tackle Lyceum of the Philippines University next Sunday.
"We're targeting it (the sweep), but we'd also like to take it one game at a time, starting with Lyceum," he said.
Shola Alvarez scored 19 points to lead the Lady Bombers, but she alone could not match the Lady Chiefs' firepower.
JRU dropped to 2-2 in the women's tournament.
The Arellano Chiefs likewise remained unbeaten in the men's division, securing its fourth win at JRU's expense, 25-18, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22.
The Heavy Bombers have now lost four straight matches.
