Arellano Chief Jiovani Jalalon lived up to his “bus driver” monicker, steering the Gilas Cadets to a second straight win, 81-59 against Singapore, in the 2016 SEABA Cup.
The cadets had beaten Malaysia 108-84 on opening day Sunday, with Monday being their bye.
Gilas got out to a big 27-14 first quarter, putting a ton of pressure on their opponents. However, their foes’ defense was able to lock in, holding the Filipinos to just 14 points in the second period. Still, it was a 41-29 lead for the cadet team at the half.
Singapore continued to slow down Gilas out of halftime, cutting their deficit all the way to just six, 43-37, on a triple, 7:43 still to play. FEU Tamaraw Mike Tolomia however steadied the ship, scoring and assisting to help the Philippines build their lead back to 18, 59-41.
One last Singapore push got them within single digits anew, 59-50, 7:57 remaining in the game. That was when Jalalon sealed the deal, scoring three straight baskets to snap their foes’ run. It was 65-50 with 5:54 left, and the cadet team’s reserves were able to get the difference up to 20+ points in game’s dying moments.
Jalalon logged a team-high 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting, with four rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Almond Vosotros knocked in 14 markers, while Mike Tolomia came off the pine for a 12-4-4 outing.
The Gilas Cadets shot 44 percent from the field, while holding their foes to a 37 percent clip. They also dominated the glass, 46-26, and points off turnovers, 23-11.
Up next for the Philippine team is Indonesia on Wednesday, followed by Thailand on Thursday. The top two teams will then play on Saturday, though both will have spots in the 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge.
