Arellano quickly licked its wounds and rebounded in the best way possible as it handed Mapua its first defeat of the tournament, 96-75, in the 92nd season of the NCAA, Tuesday afternoon (July 19) at The Arena in San Juan.

Coming off an 89-79 defeat to Letran last week, the Chiefs vented their ire on the erstwhile unbeaten Cardinals. More importantly, they did it despite the unlikely struggles of star guard Jiovanni Jalalon.

Kent Salado redeemed himself from a forgettable two point performance against the Knights as he paced the Chiefs with 20 points and nine rebounds to make up for Jalalon's struggles.

"Yung laro namin sa Letran, pag-uwi ko nun down na down ako. Di ako nakakashoot, nafrustrate ako. Inisip ko naang na kailangan ko bumawi saMapua, lalo na medyo bad game si Jio," said Salado.

Together with reserve guard Ariel Aguilar, Salado wreaked havoc in the third period as the two combined for 18 in that stretch where they began to break away for good.

It also didn't help the Cardinals that Allwell Oraeme fouled out with three minutes and 29 seconds remaining in the third quarter which resulted to the Chiefs running amok in the paint.

"We were preparing our backup guards kay Jio kasi marked man siya. There are nights na talgagang ganito, bad days, ready naman si Aguilar andnakabalik din sa Salado," said Arellano coach Jerry Codinera as they improved to 3-1 in the tournament.

"Super ang ganda ng nilaro namin. Talagang lahat sinunod nila after that tough loss against Letran kung saan down na down ang energy," he added.

Zach Nicholls added 16 points, Lervin Flores chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds as Aguilar finished with 10 points and five assists.

Jalalon made just three of his 16 shots as he finished with eight points. Hedid make up for it with nine assists and seven rebounds.

Andoy Estrella finished with 20 points as Justin Serrano added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals who dropped to 4-1.
