On the day he turned a year better, a year older, and a year wiser, Jiovani Jalalon didn’t necessarily play like, well, Jiovani Jalalon.

Jalalon only had 13 points in 29 percent shooting to go along with seven assists and four rebounds on Tuesday, his birthday.

The stat line would have been well and good for any other player but not for who is considered to be the best collegiate guard in the country today.

As it turns out, Jalalon was trying to hold back sneezes and sniffles. “May sipon lang. Pagkauwi pagkatapos ng practice kagabi, iba na pakiramdam ko,” he shared.

Nonetheless, the now 23-year-old had no problem whatsoever with his substandard performance as long as it wound up as a win. “Okay lang sa akin,” he expressed after Arellano University scored an 81-76 victory versus Lyceum of the Philippines University.

More than that, Jalalon was nothing but glad to see the long-struggling Dioncee Holts pick up the slack for him with 20 points, 15 rebounds, and two blocks.

Asked if he really made it a point for his performance to be a gift for the birthday boy, the former Rookie of the Year responded, “You can look at it that way.”

Without a doubt, the high Chief was relieved to be witnessing his reinforcements arrive, albeit slowly but surely. “Pinag-usapan namin ni Dioncee na kailangan siya sa team. Kaya naman sobrang saya ko na parang ako na rin nagdala sa kanya pabalik,” he said.

He then continued, “Sabi ko nga sa kanya, ‘Hey bro! Dioncee Holts is back!’”
