MANILA — Arellano University showcased its championship form in its first outing at the 12th Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference Sunday in San Juan when it made quick work of Polytechnic University of the Philippines in straight sets.
The reigning NCAA champions showed no mercy to the debuting Lady Radicals as the Lady Chiefs fired off from all angles to notch the 25-17, 25-6, 25-12 win.
And though Arellano’s offense was spearheaded by skipper Cristine Joy Rosario, who top scored with 10 points, the team’s output was well-distributed with Shirley Salamagos, Nikka Cariño and Menchie Tubiera combining for a total of 19 points.
“Kasi parang hindi kami kanya kanya. Parang teamwork lang talaga ‘yung ginagawa namin,” said Rosario on her assessment of her teammates’ performance.
With the Lady Chiefs leaving the competition by a mile, Arellano’s head coach, Javier Roberto, had little to no further instructions for his team when the match-up reached the second frame.
According to the team captain, the only reminder of their mentor was to keep communicating inside the court even with a lead that could cause other squads to relax.
“‘Wag lang kaming tatahimik kasi pag tumahimik kami nawawalan kami lahat ng laro eh. Basta mag ingay lang kami sa loob ng court, ‘yun,” shared Rosario.
Arellano didn’t even have to rely on guest players Lilet Mabbayad and Mina Aganon, who scored two and four markers, respectively, to take home the win.
Having faced PUP in tuneup matches in the past, the Lady Chiefs remained on their toes for any surprises that could come from the opponent’s own guest player.
“Actually, hindi (kami nag-relax) kasi naka tuneup namin sila at tinatalo namin sila pero may guest player sila eh. Hindi kami nag relax.” said the captain humbly.
Set to battle a couple of UAAP powerhouse squads one way or another, the captain closed by saying they are not looking that far ahead just yet.
