Guilmer Dela Torre put on another fireworks show at the offensive end to make sure Arellano High School remain as pacesetters in the NCAA 92 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
The graduating guard fired 30 points built on six triples and the Braves burned down Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 107-77, on Monday at the San Juan Arena.
While Dela Torre was stroking the nets right from tip-off, it wasn’t until his blazing third quarter that Arellano put distance between them and the Squires. During that timeframe, he poured in 13 points to nearly match all of their opponents’ output of 15.
Nothing but satisfied with what he saw from his prized ward, coach Tylon Darjuan said, “He was feeling it the whole game so we went to him the whole game.”
Fronliners Aaron Fermin and Carlo Abadeza added a combined 33 points and 25 rebounds in the Braves’ league-leading 12th win in 13 games.
Still entangled with Arellano atop the leaderboard is San Beda High School who dispatched University of Perpetual Help, 93-81.
The matchup wasn’t a blowout, but the seven-time defending champions also didn’t allow the Junior Altas to make it interesting. They had an answer for every run their opponents’ had and mounted a lead of as high as 15.
Germy Mahinay topped the scoring column with 12 points, but a total of eight Red Cubs contributed at least seven points. Behind another balanced attack, they improved to 12-1.
Meanwhile, Malayan High School and College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills held on to the third and fourth spots, respectively, following separate wins.
The Red Robins eked out a 77-74 victory versus Lyceum of the Philippines University to rise to 11-2 while the Junior Blazers dispatched San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 61-51, to climb to 9-4
In the day’s other game, Emilio Aguinaldo College finally got on the win column at the expense of Jose Rizal High School, 65-58. The Brigadiers are now 1-11 while the Light Bombers are 2-11.
