Guilmer Dela Torre wasn’t even supposed to be playing for Arellano High School, much less star for them.

And yet, here he is, the undisputed hottest player in the NCAA 92 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

Through two games this week, the Braves’ floor leader averaged 27 points and seven rebounds. He was stroking the nets to the tune of 24 points last Tuesday before dominating Colegio de San Juan de Letran only two days later with a 30-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Behind the graduating guard’s hot streak, Arellano is perched alone atop the leaderboard and are proving themselves as legitimate contenders. Indeed, he has them poised to build on their runner-up finish a year ago.

Those are more than enough reasons for Dela Torre to be hailed as the NCAA Juniors Player of the Week for July 10-16.

Dela Torre’s takeover wasn’t surprising at all for his mentor who said, “Alam ko namang kaya niya yun.”

Coach Tyrone Darjuan then continued while laughing, “Alam din niya kasing kelangan niyang gawin yung role na yun kasi kung hindi, papagalitan ko siya.”
