MANILA, Philippines – Jimmuel Camino captured the 1500-meter run and 3000m steeplechase gold medals yesterday to help propel Arellano University to its first ever track and field championship at the conclusion of the 91st NCAA athletics competition at the Philsports track oval in Pasig.
The pair of golden feats completed a triple-gold haul by Camino, a fourth year education student who also snared the 5000m mint two days ago, that helped seal the Chiefs the track and field title.
Camino matched his three-gold harvest last year but nothing beats his performance this year as Arellano U ended Jose Rizal’s dynastic reign in this event the latter lorded for the last five seasons.
Christopher Gonzales snatched the pole vault gold to help Arellano U pull off the improbable feat.
It was particularly sweet for Arellano U coach Giovanni Andaya, the former assistant who took over the coaching job when coach Rosito Andaya, his father, passed away in July last year.
“I don’t know how I feel,” said an emotional 27-year-old Andaya, whose father took over as coach three years ago.Â
“My father would have been happy right now if he’s here, he would have been proud of this. That’s why I’m dedicating this victory to him,” he added.
